Patio Cleaner: How to Choose the Right Product for Your Patio
The right patio cleaner depends on the stain and the paving material. For green film and algae staining, choose an algae treatment labelled for your surface. GreenBlade Winter Guard is a concentrated outdoor algae remover and garden cleaner for compatible surfaces, applied at one part product to five parts water and left to work without rinsing.
A patio can look tired long before the slabs need replacing. Green patches beside the back door, discolouration beneath garden furniture and staining around the edges can change how the whole space looks.
Searching for a patio cleaner brings up everything from cleaning liquids to pressure washers. The useful question is: which option suits the problem on your patio?
This guide explains how to identify what needs cleaning, compare the available methods and use a suitable treatment. If green film and algae staining are your main concern, GreenBlade Winter Guard is worth considering as part of your garden-care routine.
What is a patio cleaner?
A patio cleaner is a product or piece of equipment used to clean outdoor paving. Liquid patio cleaning products have different purposes: some are intended for general dirt, while others treat algae or particular stains. Pressure washers and their patio attachments clean mechanically.
Those options have different instructions and limitations. A cleaner intended for algae staining should not automatically be treated as a solution for oil, rust or marks left by building work.
Start with the surface you have and the problem you can see. That gives you a much better buying checklist than choosing the biggest bottle or the product with the strongest-sounding name.

Identify the problem before choosing a patio cleaner
Look closely at a small area before treating the whole patio. Several problems can appear together, so you may need to deal with loose dirt separately from established staining.
| What you can see | What it may be | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| A thin green film, particularly in damp or shaded areas | Algae | Consider brushing and maintenance, or an algae treatment compatible with the paving |
| Small green tufts or cushions, often around joints | Moss | Identify it separately and choose an appropriate removal method; check any product’s stated moss use |
| Persistent crust-like patches or dark spots | Possible lichen or another type of staining | Establish the cause before choosing a treatment; colour alone is not a diagnosis |
| Loose mud, fallen leaves and ordinary debris | Surface dirt | Sweep and use a cleaning method recommended for the paving |
| Localised greasy marks near a barbecue | Oil or food-related staining | Look for a suitable specialist treatment for that stain and material |
| White powdery patches on concrete paving | Possible efflorescence | Check the paving manufacturer’s advice before applying a cleaner |
The RHS explains that algae and similar growths favour moisture. Shade and limited airflow can contribute, and these growths can make paths and patios slippery. Cleaning the surface and checking why it stays damp are both useful parts of the job.
White deposits need a different assessment. Marshalls’ aftercare guidance explains that efflorescence can occur on concrete paving. It should not simply be assumed to be algae or treated with the same product.
How to compare patio cleaning products
Once you have identified the problem, compare products against the same criteria. This makes it easier to decide whether a general cleaner, specialist treatment or physical cleaning method suits your patio.
| Option | When to consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Brushing and routine washing | Loose debris and ordinary surface dirt | Suitable brush, paving care instructions and drainage |
| A specialist algae cleaner | Green film and algae staining | Stated use, material compatibility, dilution and access restrictions |
| A specialist stain remover | An identified stain such as oil or rust | Whether the exact stain and paving material are covered by its instructions |
| A pressure washer or patio attachment | Physical cleaning where the paving manufacturer permits it | Equipment settings, the condition of joints and the manufacturer’s method |
Check the paving and its finish
Find out whether you have concrete, porcelain, natural stone or another material. Then check for a sealer, coating or special finish. Keep the paving supplier’s care instructions alongside the cleaner’s label.
The joints matter too. A patio includes the material between the slabs, and its maintenance requirements may differ from those of the paving itself. Marshalls advises care with jointing materials and cleaning methods.
Patch test a discreet area before wider application. If your patio contains different materials or finishes, check each one separately. A successful test on one slab does not establish suitability for every surface in the garden.
Compare the complete cleaning routine
Some cleaners require dilution, a set contact period and rinsing. Others are applied and left in place. Read the instructions before buying so you know what equipment, time and access arrangements the job involves.
Use only the method specified for the product you choose. Instructions for another brand, including stronger mixtures or different rinsing routines, should not be transferred to Winter Guard.
Winter Guard as a patio cleaner for algae staining
GreenBlade Winter Guard is a 5L concentrated outdoor algae remover and garden cleaner designed for green film and organic staining on suitable outdoor surfaces. Its formula controls mould, algae and lichen and helps inhibit regrowth.
For a patio affected by algae staining, its practical appeal is the application method: dilute, apply evenly and leave to work. No rinsing is required.
Winter Guard also has stated uses on compatible decking, fences, pergolas, garden furniture and artificial grass. That can be useful when green growth appears in several parts of the garden, provided each material and finish is checked.
| Winter Guard product detail | What it means for your cleaning plan |
|---|---|
| Bottle size | 5L of concentrate |
| Dilution | One part Winter Guard to five parts water |
| Prepared quantity from a full bottle | 30L of solution: 5L concentrate plus 25L water |
| Hard-surface coverage | Up to 500m² per 5L bottle |
| Artificial-grass coverage | Up to 200m² per 5L bottle |
| Rinsing | No rinsing required |
The coverage figures are alternative maximums for different surface types. They are not a promise that one bottle will treat both 500m² of hard surfaces and 200m² of artificial grass. Actual coverage varies with weathering and contamination.
How much patio cleaner do you need?
Measure the area you intend to treat before comparing pack sizes. For a rectangular patio, multiply its length by its width. A patio measuring 6m by 4m has an area of 24m².
For an irregular shape, divide it into smaller rectangles and add their areas. Include any compatible additional surfaces you plan to treat, while keeping their different coverage requirements in mind.
Compare products using the stated coverage and preparation instructions, rather than bottle volume alone. A litre of concentrate and a litre of ready-to-use cleaner are different quantities of usable treatment.
For Winter Guard, the mixture is one part concentrate to five parts water:
| Winter Guard concentrate | Water to add | Total prepared solution |
|---|---|---|
| 100ml | 500ml | 600ml |
| 500ml | 2.5L | 3L |
| 1L | 5L | 6L |
These examples explain dilution. They do not establish the area each batch will cover on your particular patio. Follow the label’s application guidance rather than spreading a batch more thinly to reach a maximum figure.
How to use patio cleaner: Winter Guard application
1. Check the area and plan access
Read the Winter Guard label and your surface-care instructions. Patch test each material and finish, then check the label’s weather and application conditions before treating a larger area.
Plan how people and pets will move around the garden while the surface is being treated. This is especially useful for patios beside a back door or on the route to a gate.
2. Remove loose material
Move portable furniture and sweep up leaves, mud and debris. Inspect the paving and joints while the area is clear; cleaning will not repair a cracked slab or an uneven step.
3. Prepare the correct dilution
Shake the product and measure one part Winter Guard with five parts water. Use a suitable measuring container and check your sprayer’s capacity before mixing.
Do not mix Winter Guard with other cleaning chemicals. Follow the label’s instructions for protective equipment and handling.
4. Apply evenly to compatible surfaces
Use a suitable pump sprayer and follow the product’s application directions. Work methodically so you can keep track of the treated area.
Follow the label’s precautions for surrounding plants, drains, ponds and waterways. Keep the treatment within the areas you have checked for compatibility.
5. Leave it to work and allow it to dry
Winter Guard requires no rinsing. Keep people and pets away until the surface is fully dry, allowing at least 15 minutes and longer if it remains wet. Follow any additional restrictions on the label.
The minimum access period is not a promise about stain-removal speed. Assess the result and follow the label for any repeat treatment.
Do you need a pressure washer as well?
Winter Guard’s stated method does not require rinsing or pressure washing. If you choose it for compatible algae-stained surfaces, follow that method.
A pressure washer may suit other cleaning jobs where the paving manufacturer permits it. Check the equipment instructions and the condition of the surface and joints before use. Treat the patio as a complete installation, including its edges, jointing and any coating.
Choose the method that addresses the problem you have identified. Loose dirt, algae staining and damaged joints are separate issues, even when they are visible in the same area.
Looking after your patio through autumn and winter
Inspect the patio before seasonal leaves accumulate, including corners beneath furniture and the route you use most often. Choose a treatment day that meets the cleaner’s labelled conditions.
After cleaning, remove fallen leaves regularly and keep drains clear. Where appropriate, address overhanging vegetation and restricted airflow. The RHS recommends brushing and improving the conditions around affected surfaces to help discourage returning growth.
If the same corner repeatedly stays wet, investigate the drainage as part of your maintenance plan. An algae treatment does not correct standing water or a structural problem.
For gardens with artificial grass, continue its usual brushing and debris-removal routine. GreenBlade’s artificial grass care guide covers that separate part of garden maintenance.
Patio cleaner FAQs
What is the best patio cleaner for green algae?
Choose an algae treatment that is compatible with your paving and finish, with instructions you can follow. GreenBlade Winter Guard is an option for green film and algae staining on suitable outdoor surfaces. Check its label and patch test before wider application.
Can I use patio cleaner on any paving?
Check the exact material, its finish and the jointing, then follow both the paving manufacturer’s advice and the cleaner’s label. “Patio cleaner” describes a use; it does not establish universal surface compatibility.
Is Winter Guard ready to use?
Winter Guard is a concentrate. Mix one part product with five parts water. For example, 500ml of concentrate plus 2.5L of water makes 3L of prepared solution.
How soon can pets use the patio after Winter Guard?
Keep pets and people off the treated area until fully dry, allowing at least 15 minutes and longer if it remains wet. Follow any additional label restrictions. Check dryness before reopening the area.
Will Winter Guard remove moss, oil or every black spot?
Winter Guard’s stated uses include algae, mould and lichen. Identify the problem before treatment. Check the label for any moss use, and choose an appropriate specialist method for unrelated stains such as oil. A dark spot alone does not establish its cause.
Can I use bleach or vinegar instead of a patio cleaner?
Check your paving manufacturer’s instructions before applying household chemicals. Their suitability depends on the material and finish. Choose a method intended for the identified problem and surface, and never mix cleaning chemicals.
How quickly will the patio look clean?
Assess the result according to your chosen product’s instructions. Winter Guard’s drying and access guidance should not be interpreted as a fixed time for every stain to disappear. Follow the label when deciding whether further treatment is needed.
Choose a patio cleaner that suits your garden
Identify the staining, check the paving and compare the full application routine. Those three steps help you choose a cleaner with a clear purpose.
If green film and algae staining are the problem, GreenBlade Winter Guard offers a concentrated treatment you can apply and leave to work on compatible garden surfaces.
Shop GreenBlade Winter Guard and plan your patio-cleaning routine.

Working well in initial testsWorking well in initial tests This is a little on the pricey side for the amount you get but it does dilute quite a lot so goes a reasonable way.Easy to use by just adding it to water and pouring it over with a watering can.It smells nice but that doesn't last too long or get overpowering which I feel is a good thing. It does seem to lean although my major test is yet to come at a holiday home so should there be any issues I will update this review.Seems good quality and cleans well so hoping for good results when I treat a much larger area.Verified
AstroTurf cleaner Minty scented. Easy to use and dilute to desired strength. The upper end of the price for the quantity you receive - I diluted this with a 1 part liquid 5 parts water and I could smell the fragrance for a few hours but with the hot weather the urine smells promptly came back. Have used almost the whole bottle over two applications so it's quite expensive but for smaller areas may last longerVerified
GreenBlade Green Guard Artificial Grass Cleaner & Odour Remover, 1L 1 Pack My ExperienceRight, morning everyone! Now, if you keep dogs, you know the struggle in winter or when it’s absolutely tipping it down outside—the ruddy dogs only want to go out if you give them a gentle little nudge on the end of your foot (only joking, of course, just a little budge with the boot!). Because of that, I set up a dedicated patch of astroturf for them near the house so they can do their business quickly without getting bogged down in the mud. It works smashingly well, but the smell gets right on your nerves! And I’ve got to say, this stuff is proper job! What I really like is the thick gel consistency. Unlike all sorts of other watery cleaners I’ve used in the past that just wash away in a flash, this gel actually feels like it’s clinging right to the "blades" of grass and backing so the bio-enzymes can get to work. I’ve used it on the main path as well as the astroturf patch, and it works equally well on both. It definitely removes the lingering wee smell completely rather than just masking it, leaving behind a nice fresh Watermelon Breeze scent. Ideal bit of kit for keeping the yard smelling fresh! The ProductThe GreenBlade Green Guard Artificial Grass Cleaner & Odour Remover (1L Bottle). Made in the UK, featuring a thick probiotic bio-enzyme gel formula with a Watermelon Breeze fragrance. Specifically engineered to cling to artificial turf fibers on hard-standing bases (concrete, patios, decking) to eliminate dog urine and pet odors at the source. Safe for pets and children once dry.The Ideal User / Deal BreakerAn essential buy for dog owners, pet keepers, and homeowners who have artificial grass laid over hard surfaces like concrete or patios and need a thick cleaner that won't immediately drain away. The deal breaker is if you need a pre-attached hose-end spray bottle for a massive multi-acre field, as this concentrated gel requires manual dilution in a watering can or sprayer.SummaryA remarkably effective, thick probiotic gel cleaner that clings where it's needed and completely neutralises stubborn pet odours. It does a fantastic job keeping the dog patch and path fresh, keeps the yard setup running smoothly, and gets 5 stars from me!Star Rating: 5/5Verified
Fresh effective cleaner that removes odours from artificial grass This cleaner has a fresh scent and works well on artificial grass, especially in areas used by pets. It removes odours effectively and leaves the surface looking cleaner without residue. The area cover depends on what surface you have under the artificial grass, if it’s concrete it’s a much smaller ratio so doesn’t cover as much area. I have a small courtyard and had to buy another bottle to get the proper coverage. It is overall a helpful product for keeping artificial grass fresh.Verified
Very effective - nice smelling too I’m a recent convert to the world of artificial grass, having been inspired by a neighbour who got a patch for her dog to use. Our back garden is all stone flags and raised beds so it’s not welcoming for our little dog when she needs to answer a call of nature at short notice. In most cases our regular walks are enough for her needs, but occasionally she needs to go outside and it just won’t wait. Artificial grass is the answer to that problem and this cleaner is the solution to the problem that arises afterwards. It’s more than just a general cleaner that uses an anti-surfactant to remove dirt, although it does have that element. In this product there’s an enzymatic element that breaks down the stuff that causes odours: that detritus has attached itself to the inner pile of the artificial grass and as it decays it produces the odour. This cleaner helps to break that down rather than just trying to release it so it can be washed away.It really does work well and I’ve found it best to use it last thing at night and let it sit until morning. There’s a fresh odour that adds to the general feeling of cleanliness and makes the grass much more pleasant to be around. It’s not cheap so you’ll have to make up your own mind about whether it’s good value for money. I can say that it definitely works though, and perhaps that effectiveness is worth paying for.Verified
Really Handy for Keeping Our Artificial Grass Fresh. I bought this because we have artificial grass and, with having a dog, it can get a bit smelly, especially when the weather is warm. I wanted something that would help get rid of the smell without using anything too harsh.I've been really happy with this so far. It's a thick gel, so it doesn't just disappear into the grass as soon as you put it down. It's easy to spread around and doesn't make a huge mess while you're using it.The main reason I bought it was for the dog urine smell, and it has definitely helped. After using it, the grass smells much fresher and the usual doggy smell is noticeably reduced.I also like that it doesn't have that really strong chemical smell that you get with some outdoor cleaners. The 1-litre bottle is a good size too, and I think it should last me quite a while.I've also used a bit on the patio where the dog tends to walk after going outside, and it's been useful there as well.Overall, I'm really pleased with it. It's easy to use, doesn't smell harsh and has made a noticeable difference to keeping our artificial grass smelling fresh. It's definitely something I'll keep using, especially during the warmer months.Verified
Leaves a nice smell GreenBlade Active Max Artificial Grass Cleaner for Dogs is a useful solution for keeping artificial grass fresh, clean and more pleasant around pets. The bio-enzymatic formula is designed to tackle dog urine odours rather than simply covering them up, making it particularly suitable for areas that are regularly used by dogs. The Cool Mint scent leaves a fresh fragrance after application without being excessively overpowering. The 1L bottle provides a reasonable amount of cleaner, especially because it can be diluted at a 1:5 ratio. This makes it practical for treating larger areas of artificial grass while keeping usage economical. The cleaner is straightforward to incorporate into a regular garden cleaning routine and can help maintain a fresher-looking and better-smelling lawn. The product is especially convenient for households where artificial grass receives frequent use from dogs, as unpleasant smells can otherwise become noticeable during warmer weather. The mint fragrance gives the grass a clean, refreshed feel after treatment. Overall, GreenBlade Active Max combines odour control, a pleasant scent and a concentrated formula in a convenient 1L bottle, making it a practical artificial grass cleaner for dog owners looking to keep outdoor areas hygienic and fresh.Verified
Safe, UK-made gel for artificial grass and patios If you’ve ever spent a summer wondering if your garden is a dog loo in disguise, this GreenBlade Green Guard cleaner is a bit of a revelation for artificial grass and patios. I picked up the 1L bottle after trying a few “fresh scent” sprays that just left the lawn smelling like a perfumed kennel. This one’s a thick probiotic gel, which means it actually breaks down the source of the pong rather than just layering on a fragrance. The science bit is simple: good bacteria munch away at the nasties, so you’re left with genuinely neutral grass, not a chemical cloud.I used it neat on the worst patches (thanks, spaniel) and diluted for a general spruce-up. The instructions are a bit vague on ratios, so I played it by ear, but it worked well both ways. The lack of a strong scent after use was a surprise – it doesn’t leave your garden smelling like a lemon grove, but it does mean you know the odour’s actually gone, not just hidden. The 1L bottle covered my small lawn and a couple of high-traffic patio spots, but if you’ve got a big garden or a pack of dogs, you’ll probably need more than one bottle for a deep clean. What I hadn’t expected was how safe it felt to use – no gloves needed, and I didn’t worry about the kids or the dog rolling around straight after. It’s UK-made, which is a quiet reassurance if you’re fussy about what goes on your grass. The gel consistency means it clings to the blades rather than running straight off, but it does take a bit longer to rinse out of a watering can than a thin liquid. For anyone with a shared garden or a communal play area, it’s a relief to know you’re not leaving behind anything harsh or toxic. One thing to keep in mind: there’s no lingering “clean” smell, so if you’re after that just-mown fragrance, you’ll be disappointed. Also, the lack of detailed dilution guidance means you might use more than you need at first, which could get pricey if you’re treating a large area regularly. Cleaning up is easy – just a quick brush and rinse before applying – but the bottle does get a bit sticky if you’re not careful with the cap.For the price, it’s good value for small to medium lawns, especially if you’re fed up with chemical sprays that don’t actually solve the problem. If you’ve got a massive garden or want a strong scent, you might want to look elsewhere, but for most pet owners, this is a practical, genuinely effective fix. 4 stars – it does what it promises, is safe for the whole family, and finally lets you enjoy the garden again without holding your nose.Posted on Google![]()

Our artificial grass was looking a bit tired and we weren’t sure what to do with it as it’s in a commercial setting in our pub restaurant premises so has a lot of footfall, spilt food and drinks. My friend recommended giving Green Blade Cleanse a call and I’m so glad I did. They recommended using a product called cleanse and what can I say! It looks like it’s just been laid and it smells amazing.Verified
Brilliant product, fantastic results Fantastic product, smells incredible and works perfectly, artificial grass has come back to life and all pet smells have gone.Verified
Brilliant product!Brilliant product! This has made a huge difference to our artificial grass! We have a dog, and it was starting to hold onto those unpleasant urine smells, especially in warm weather. After using this, the odours were noticeably reduced and the grass smelled fresh again. The gel is easy to dilute and apply, and a little goes a long way. I also like that it's pet-friendly once used as directed, so I don't have to worry about letting my dog back out.A great product that actually does what it promises. If you have artificial grass and pets, it's definitely worth having on hand.Load more
