Spray and Leave Patio Cleaner: How to Remove Green Algae Before Winter.

To tackle green algae on a patio, clear loose debris, identify the paving material and choose a compatible cleaning method. If you use a spray and leave patio cleaner, follow its dilution and application instructions, then allow it to work. Keep leaves under control and address persistent damp areas to discourage returning growth.

Your patio might still be perfectly sound, but a green film across the slabs can make the whole garden look neglected. Perhaps it starts behind the garden furniture, along the fence or beside the back step. Before long, you are wondering how to get the patio looking clean again.

Autumn is a useful time to take stock. You still need the route to the shed, the space outside the back door and the garden areas your family uses, even when summer evenings outside have finished.

If you want to tackle algae staining with a treatment you can apply and leave in place, explore GreenBlade Winter Guard. Start by checking the surfaces you want to clean.

Why is my patio turning green?

A thin green coating on paving is often algae. It favours moisture, and shaded areas with limited airflow can be particularly prone to it. The RHS notes that these growths can make paths, patios and decking slippery.
Walk around your garden and look at where the green patches appear. Are they beneath furniture? Along the edge of a fence? In the same corner that stays wet after the rest of the patio has dried?
That pattern can help you plan the job. Cleaning the visible patch is one part of the routine; understanding why that particular area stays damp helps you decide what to maintain afterwards.
Green growth does not automatically mean the paving needs replacing. Check the condition of the slabs and joints separately from the surface staining.

What is a spray and leave patio cleaner?

A spray and leave patio cleaner is applied to a suitable outdoor surface and left to work according to its instructions. Some products are concentrates that need dilution; others come ready to use.

Before buying, check:

  • The problem it treats. Look for an algae treatment when green film is your concern.
  • Surface compatibility. Identify the paving and any coating or sealer.
  • Preparation and application. Check what equipment and steps are required.
  • Coverage. Compare the area you need to treat with the stated coverage.
  • Access afterwards. Plan when children, pets and other people can use the space again.

For a garden with more than one affected surface, make a short list before choosing a product. The patio, fence and artificial lawn may need different compatibility checks even when they are part of the same cleaning session.

Why choose Winter Guard for green garden surfaces?

GreenBlade Winter Guard is a 5L concentrated outdoor cleaner for algae stains and green film on suitable patios, decking, fences, pergolas, garden furniture and artificial grass. Its formula controls mould, algae and lichen and helps inhibit regrowth.

How to remove algae from patio surfaces with Winter Guard

1. Decide which areas need attention

Look at the patio in sections rather than treating the whole garden as one job. Make a note of the main walking route, the seating area and the edges.

Move portable furniture and garden items so you can see the surface properly. If you uncover a patch that has been hidden for months, include it in your inspection.

Check the paving manufacturer’s care advice and the Winter Guard label. Patch test an inconspicuous area before treating more widely, including separate tests for different finishes.

2. Clear the surface

Sweep up leaves and loose debris. This also gives you a clearer view of cracks, uneven slabs and other issues that a cleaning treatment will not repair.

Have a bag or container ready so the material you remove does not simply blow onto another part of the garden.

If you are also working on artificial grass, use an appropriate artificial-grass brush and follow the lawn manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

3. Measure the mixture

Shake Winter Guard, then mix one part concentrate with five parts water.

ConcentrateWaterTotal prepared solution
100ml500ml600ml
500ml2.5L3L
1L5L6L

Use a marked measuring container and check your sprayer’s capacity before mixing. These amounts show the dilution, not how many square metres each batch will cover.
Do not mix the product with other cleaners.

4. Apply according to the label

Use a suitable pump sprayer and work evenly across compatible areas. Follow the label’s weather, surface and application conditions, including its precautions for plants, drains, ponds and waterways.

Choose a time when you can keep the treated area out of use. For a patio beside the back door, think about how people and pets will move in and out of the house during the job.

5. Leave the treatment to work

No rinsing is required. Keep people and pets away until fully dry, allowing at least 15 minutes and longer if the surface remains wet. Follow any additional label restrictions.

Drying time is not a promise about when every stain will disappear. Inspect the area afterwards and follow the label’s guidance for any repeat treatment.

Can I include decking, fencing and artificial grass?

Start with the surface list you made before buying. Check each material rather than assuming that approval for one area applies to everything nearby.

Painted fencing, coated decking and garden furniture can have finishes with their own care requirements. Keep those instructions with your cleaning plan.

For artificial grass, continue the ordinary maintenance that keeps loose material out of the fibres. GreenBlade’s artificial grass care guide covers the wider routine.

A useful way to organise the work is to divide the garden into manageable areas. Prepare one, carry out the required checks, then move on to the next. That makes it easier to keep track of where you have applied treatment and which areas are ready to use again.

How can I discourage algae from returning?

Regular brushing, better airflow and effective drainage can help discourage returning growth. Keep drains clear and consider suitable pruning where overhanging vegetation leaves a surface shaded and damp.

Build a short garden check into your routine:

  • Look at the route you use most often.
  • Remove accumulating leaves.
  • Inspect corners hidden by furniture.
  • Note any persistent standing water.
  • Revisit affected areas in line with your cleaner’s instructions.

Take a photograph before you begin and another when you assess the result. Use a similar angle and lighting so you can compare the same area fairly. This is more useful than relying on memory when deciding what needs further attention.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove algae from patio slabs naturally?

Brushing and maintaining the surrounding conditions are useful options if you want to avoid a chemical treatment. Use equipment suitable for the paving and its finish. The RHS recommends non-chemical maintenance methods; a specialist cleaner is an option when you choose to use one according to its label.

Do I need a pressure washer?

A pressure washer is one cleaning method. Choose a method that suits the material, joints and condition of your patio. If you prefer an application you can leave in place, check the instructions for the cleaner you are considering.

Is green algae the same as moss?

No. Algae often appears as a thin film; moss tends to form small tufts or cushions. Identify the growth before selecting a treatment, especially if there is more than one type on the patio.

What should I check before buying a patio cleaner?

Check the target problem, compatible materials, dilution, coverage, application conditions and access instructions. For a mixed garden, compare those details against each surface you intend to treat.

Is autumn a good time to clean a patio?

Autumn is a practical time to inspect the outdoor areas you will keep using through winter. The RHS’s September advice recommends cleaning affected patios and hard surfaces before they become slippery during winter. Apply any treatment only in the conditions specified on its label.

Get your garden ready for winter

Start with the green patches that are bothering you most. Inspect the surface, clear the loose material and choose a cleaning routine you can maintain as the season changes.

Working well in initial testsWorking well in initial tests This is a little on the pricey side for the amount you get but it does dilute quite a lot so goes a reasonable way.Easy to use by just adding it to water and pouring it over with a watering can.It smells nice but that doesn't last too long or get overpowering which I feel is a good thing. It does seem to lean although my major test is yet to come at a holiday home so should there be any issues I will update this review.Seems good quality and cleans well so hoping for good results when I treat a much larger area.

AstroTurf cleaner Minty scented. Easy to use and dilute to desired strength. The upper end of the price for the quantity you receive - I diluted this with a 1 part liquid 5 parts water and I could smell the fragrance for a few hours but with the hot weather the urine smells promptly came back. Have used almost the whole bottle over two applications so it's quite expensive but for smaller areas may last longer

GreenBlade Green Guard Artificial Grass Cleaner & Odour Remover, 1L 1 Pack My ExperienceRight, morning everyone! Now, if you keep dogs, you know the struggle in winter or when it’s absolutely tipping it down outside—the ruddy dogs only want to go out if you give them a gentle little nudge on the end of your foot (only joking, of course, just a little budge with the boot!). Because of that, I set up a dedicated patch of astroturf for them near the house so they can do their business quickly without getting bogged down in the mud. It works smashingly well, but the smell gets right on your nerves! And I’ve got to say, this stuff is proper job! What I really like is the thick gel consistency. Unlike all sorts of other watery cleaners I’ve used in the past that just wash away in a flash, this gel actually feels like it’s clinging right to the "blades" of grass and backing so the bio-enzymes can get to work. I’ve used it on the main path as well as the astroturf patch, and it works equally well on both. It definitely removes the lingering wee smell completely rather than just masking it, leaving behind a nice fresh Watermelon Breeze scent. Ideal bit of kit for keeping the yard smelling fresh! The ProductThe GreenBlade Green Guard Artificial Grass Cleaner & Odour Remover (1L Bottle). Made in the UK, featuring a thick probiotic bio-enzyme gel formula with a Watermelon Breeze fragrance. Specifically engineered to cling to artificial turf fibers on hard-standing bases (concrete, patios, decking) to eliminate dog urine and pet odors at the source. Safe for pets and children once dry.The Ideal User / Deal BreakerAn essential buy for dog owners, pet keepers, and homeowners who have artificial grass laid over hard surfaces like concrete or patios and need a thick cleaner that won't immediately drain away. The deal breaker is if you need a pre-attached hose-end spray bottle for a massive multi-acre field, as this concentrated gel requires manual dilution in a watering can or sprayer.SummaryA remarkably effective, thick probiotic gel cleaner that clings where it's needed and completely neutralises stubborn pet odours. It does a fantastic job keeping the dog patch and path fresh, keeps the yard setup running smoothly, and gets 5 stars from me!Star Rating: 5/5

Fresh effective cleaner that removes odours from artificial grass This cleaner has a fresh scent and works well on artificial grass, especially in areas used by pets. It removes odours effectively and leaves the surface looking cleaner without residue. The area cover depends on what surface you have under the artificial grass, if it’s concrete it’s a much smaller ratio so doesn’t cover as much area. I have a small courtyard and had to buy another bottle to get the proper coverage. It is overall a helpful product for keeping artificial grass fresh.

Very effective - nice smelling too I’m a recent convert to the world of artificial grass, having been inspired by a neighbour who got a patch for her dog to use. Our back garden is all stone flags and raised beds so it’s not welcoming for our little dog when she needs to answer a call of nature at short notice. In most cases our regular walks are enough for her needs, but occasionally she needs to go outside and it just won’t wait. Artificial grass is the answer to that problem and this cleaner is the solution to the problem that arises afterwards. It’s more than just a general cleaner that uses an anti-surfactant to remove dirt, although it does have that element. In this product there’s an enzymatic element that breaks down the stuff that causes odours: that detritus has attached itself to the inner pile of the artificial grass and as it decays it produces the odour. This cleaner helps to break that down rather than just trying to release it so it can be washed away.It really does work well and I’ve found it best to use it last thing at night and let it sit until morning. There’s a fresh odour that adds to the general feeling of cleanliness and makes the grass much more pleasant to be around. It’s not cheap so you’ll have to make up your own mind about whether it’s good value for money. I can say that it definitely works though, and perhaps that effectiveness is worth paying for.

Really Handy for Keeping Our Artificial Grass Fresh. I bought this because we have artificial grass and, with having a dog, it can get a bit smelly, especially when the weather is warm. I wanted something that would help get rid of the smell without using anything too harsh.I've been really happy with this so far. It's a thick gel, so it doesn't just disappear into the grass as soon as you put it down. It's easy to spread around and doesn't make a huge mess while you're using it.The main reason I bought it was for the dog urine smell, and it has definitely helped. After using it, the grass smells much fresher and the usual doggy smell is noticeably reduced.I also like that it doesn't have that really strong chemical smell that you get with some outdoor cleaners. The 1-litre bottle is a good size too, and I think it should last me quite a while.I've also used a bit on the patio where the dog tends to walk after going outside, and it's been useful there as well.Overall, I'm really pleased with it. It's easy to use, doesn't smell harsh and has made a noticeable difference to keeping our artificial grass smelling fresh. It's definitely something I'll keep using, especially during the warmer months.

Leaves a nice smell GreenBlade Active Max Artificial Grass Cleaner for Dogs is a useful solution for keeping artificial grass fresh, clean and more pleasant around pets. The bio-enzymatic formula is designed to tackle dog urine odours rather than simply covering them up, making it particularly suitable for areas that are regularly used by dogs. The Cool Mint scent leaves a fresh fragrance after application without being excessively overpowering. The 1L bottle provides a reasonable amount of cleaner, especially because it can be diluted at a 1:5 ratio. This makes it practical for treating larger areas of artificial grass while keeping usage economical. The cleaner is straightforward to incorporate into a regular garden cleaning routine and can help maintain a fresher-looking and better-smelling lawn. The product is especially convenient for households where artificial grass receives frequent use from dogs, as unpleasant smells can otherwise become noticeable during warmer weather. The mint fragrance gives the grass a clean, refreshed feel after treatment. Overall, GreenBlade Active Max combines odour control, a pleasant scent and a concentrated formula in a convenient 1L bottle, making it a practical artificial grass cleaner for dog owners looking to keep outdoor areas hygienic and fresh.

Safe, UK-made gel for artificial grass and patios If you’ve ever spent a summer wondering if your garden is a dog loo in disguise, this GreenBlade Green Guard cleaner is a bit of a revelation for artificial grass and patios. I picked up the 1L bottle after trying a few “fresh scent” sprays that just left the lawn smelling like a perfumed kennel. This one’s a thick probiotic gel, which means it actually breaks down the source of the pong rather than just layering on a fragrance. The science bit is simple: good bacteria munch away at the nasties, so you’re left with genuinely neutral grass, not a chemical cloud.I used it neat on the worst patches (thanks, spaniel) and diluted for a general spruce-up. The instructions are a bit vague on ratios, so I played it by ear, but it worked well both ways. The lack of a strong scent after use was a surprise – it doesn’t leave your garden smelling like a lemon grove, but it does mean you know the odour’s actually gone, not just hidden. The 1L bottle covered my small lawn and a couple of high-traffic patio spots, but if you’ve got a big garden or a pack of dogs, you’ll probably need more than one bottle for a deep clean. What I hadn’t expected was how safe it felt to use – no gloves needed, and I didn’t worry about the kids or the dog rolling around straight after. It’s UK-made, which is a quiet reassurance if you’re fussy about what goes on your grass. The gel consistency means it clings to the blades rather than running straight off, but it does take a bit longer to rinse out of a watering can than a thin liquid. For anyone with a shared garden or a communal play area, it’s a relief to know you’re not leaving behind anything harsh or toxic. One thing to keep in mind: there’s no lingering “clean” smell, so if you’re after that just-mown fragrance, you’ll be disappointed. Also, the lack of detailed dilution guidance means you might use more than you need at first, which could get pricey if you’re treating a large area regularly. Cleaning up is easy – just a quick brush and rinse before applying – but the bottle does get a bit sticky if you’re not careful with the cap.For the price, it’s good value for small to medium lawns, especially if you’re fed up with chemical sprays that don’t actually solve the problem. If you’ve got a massive garden or want a strong scent, you might want to look elsewhere, but for most pet owners, this is a practical, genuinely effective fix. 4 stars – it does what it promises, is safe for the whole family, and finally lets you enjoy the garden again without holding your nose.

Our artificial grass was looking a bit tired and we weren’t sure what to do with it as it’s in a commercial setting in our pub restaurant premises so has a lot of footfall, spilt food and drinks. My friend recommended giving Green Blade Cleanse a call and I’m so glad I did. They recommended using a product called cleanse and what can I say! It looks like it’s just been laid and it smells amazing.

Brilliant product!Brilliant product! This has made a huge difference to our artificial grass! We have a dog, and it was starting to hold onto those unpleasant urine smells, especially in warm weather. After using this, the odours were noticeably reduced and the grass smelled fresh again. The gel is easy to dilute and apply, and a little goes a long way. I also like that it's pet-friendly once used as directed, so I don't have to worry about letting my dog back out.A great product that actually does what it promises. If you have artificial grass and pets, it's definitely worth having on hand.
